ABC Technology JSC built Pupi — a gamified quiz app for Vietnamese grades 1–12. It promises painless learning through quiz battles, flashcards, and a knowledge tree covering every subject. In year one since the launch, it reached 50k+ downloads, with 4.3 stars from 136 ratings on App Store.
What I did as Business Analyst cum Product Designer in this team:
- Turned business needs into quiz, classroom, and social requirements
- Designed player loops (quiz playing, streaks, golden eggs, badges) and teacher loops (classes, question banks, grading)
My team and I shipped Pupi features: quiz (both playing solo and real-time with host), flashcard, classrooms, teacher tools, challenges and streaks — on iPhone, Android, and Web.
➤ Impact:
- Content engine that compounds: Personal plus community question banks keep tons of fresh quizzes coming.
I. Problem
- Boring homework baseline: Persona shows the starting point: students with no study habits because homework bores them.

II. Goal
Make grades 1–12 review feel like play, with teachers and friends inside the loop
In short: quiz battles with friends and teachers, self-study libraries, play anytime anywhere, and class leaderboards for friendly competition.
What this means: students explore and succeed through play; teachers create classes, materials, and graded assignments; everyone tracks progress on leaderboards.
III. Design Process
1. Preparation
Timeline: Aug 2022 – Jul 2023
Briefing: We believe in a gamification approach to grades 1–12 learning: a knowledge tree across grades 1–12, quiz battles with class leaderboards, and teacher-run classrooms.
2. Research & Analytics
Benchmarks & Data: We reviewed how exam-prep apps around us worked: VietJack and Loigiaihay. Gap: all drilled past papers for exams; none made daily review feel like play with friends, streaks, and class boards. No marketing site does this job — the app is the product: play loops first, teacher tools second, social proof always visible.
Hypothesis: If studying feels like play with friends and teachers — battles, streaks, golden eggs, class leaderboards — students will build study habits that boring homework never gave them.
3. Prototyping
User flows first, testable screens later.
- Play loop: Pick a quiz battle → answer under time → earn golden eggs and experience → climb the class board → keep the streak. Flash Quiz at 19:00–21:00 pays double eggs.
- Class loop: Teacher creates a class → builds quizzes from personal and community banks → assigns tests → students play in class → teacher grades and tracks.
- Social loop: Follow friends with mutual counts → Doing daily challenges, compare streaks, badges and gems → Return daily.

4. Visual Design
- Reward interface: Golden eggs, streak flames, badge grids, and class boards — every reward visible, countable, and shareable.
- Classroom cards: Teacher web surface with class creation, material uploads, and assignment grading in the same visual language.
5. Testing & Finalization
- Streak economics FlashQuiz pays double golden eggs and experience from 19:00 to 21:00 daily — prime-time retention window.
- Classroom tests Remade classrooms assign and grade tests inside classes; personal plus community question banks feed them.
- Flashcards build Personal flashcard decks — self-study beyond battles.
6. Measure & Iterate
I measure results with the product and data teams. We track how key numbers change and find out why.
- Thin content → question banks: Fans want more quizzes. Personal plus community banks now supply thousands of fresh questions.
- Live store tracking: 4.3 stars from 136 ratings.
7. Scale
I design for scale with a clear system: design systems and component-driven design for long-term impact.
IV. Outcome
1. Design Solution
Gamified app plus teacher web surface: play, study, teach, and compete in one loop.
- Play: quiz battles, flashcards, streaks, golden eggs, badges, events
- Study: knowledge tree grades 1–12, personal decks, for-you picks
- Teach: classes, question banks, quiz creation, grading, teacher profiles
- Social
- Follow friends, News feed
- Class leaderboards, Quiz-wide leaderboards
- Challenge and compare
2. Testing
Each flows tested before rollout.
“This Pupi chicken roasts me when I'm wrong — more quizzes, please!”
3. Results
- Knowledge tree plus battles turned review into daily play.
- Teachers can run full classrooms from both mobiles and desktops.
Stats
- 50k+ downloads in year one
- 4.3 stars from 136 ratings
- Published on iPhone, Android, and Web
V. What I Learned
Teachers are players too. Mobile quiz creation and classroom tests unlocked the supply side. Design the authoring loop with the same care as the play loop.
